Germany continues to see remarkable growth in the number of international students pursuing degree studies at its universities. In the fall semester of the 2022-23 academic year, nearly 370,000 international students were registered at these institutions, a year-over-year increase of 5%. These numbers put Germany among the top three most popular countries for international students, the first time the country has reached this level.
“German universities and research institutions continue to enjoy great popularity. The high quality of their academic education, freedom from tuition fees, and good career opportunities for graduates in Germany’s labour market have been key factors in Germany’s rise to become one of the three most popular countries for study,” said DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee.
These findings were released early this fall in ‘Wissenschaft weltoffen 2023’, a publication on the international dimensions of studies and research in Germany and worldwide produced annually by DAAD and the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW).
