The Association for German Education in Calgary with the support of the German Consulate General Vancouver and the Goethe-Institut invites you to a screening of the film “Jenseits der Stille” on January 27.

Before the Oscar® winner “CODA,” there was the 1996 German film “Beyond Silence,” an extraordinary drama about a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) girl trying to live her own life while growing up on that thin invisible line between hearing and deafness. While it mainly focuses on her growing yearning and aspiration, the movie also shows considerable empathy and understanding of her deaf parents, who have depended on her for years.

Caroline Link's film debut (Oscar® winner with “Nowhere in Africa”) is alternatively amusing and touching. Even 25 years later, this film still feels fresh and relevant - and possibly even better than the later Hollywood version.
