The German-Canadian Society e.V. (DKG) is a non-profit association that has existed since 1951 to promote economic, cultural and human relations between Germany and Canada.

In 1951, the DKG was founded with the purpose of establishing contacts between the Canadian soldiers stationed in Hanover at that time and German families. A few years later, the then DKG President Theanolte Bähnisch initiated and launched the Working Student Programme, or WSP for short. In 1965, 26 German students travelled to Canada for the first time. The previous year, 143 Canadian students had already come to Germany to work for two months and explore the country for one month.
