On Saturday, September 13, we had the great pleasure to welcome scientists from the research field of oceanology at a reception on the German research vessel SONNE, hosted by the German Consul General together with the Captain of the SONNE.
After a welcome address by Captain Birnbaum and Consul General Marc Eichhorn, the expedition's lead scientists explained the expedition's objectives: to determine the hazard and magnitude of future earthquakes and tsunamis off the coast of Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and the possibility of CO2 capture and storage in the basalt basins of the oceanic crust.
The research is being conducted in close collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada, the University of Alberta, the Japan Agency of Marine-Earth Science & Technology (JAMSTEC) and Ocean Networks Canada (ONC)
