“All Quiet on the Western Front” has been nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. The war drama is the eighth non-English-language film to make it onto the lists of nominations in both categories. Never before has a German film been in the running with such good odds.
Film director Edward Berger said he felt “a bit overwhelmed” by the nominations for nine categories. When the nominations were announced in January, he said he was “incredibly happy and proud”. Just under a month later, Berger and his team got to celebrate their first triumph at the British Academy Film Awards. His film won seven Baftas, including the prize for best film. At the end of the show, Berger was over the moon, having also won the award for best director. “What an evening, I can’t believe it!” he said. Alongside the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Baftas are among the most highly-prized awards in the world of film.
