On June 1, the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival screens the powerful German feature film, “The Forger,” starring the immensely talented young actor Louis Hofmann, acclaimed for his role in the anti-war film “Land of Mine”.

Based on a true story, director Maggie Peren delicately unravels the narrative of the conflicted protagonist, Cioma Schonhaus, as he embarks on an unexpected journey into heroism. Set in 1942, against the backdrop of Berlin, Cioma, a young Jewish graphic artist, finds himself defiant in the face of Nazi intimidation and determined to preserve his joy for life. With his best friend Det, he assumes the guise of German naval officers, skillfully navigating the treacherous terrain of Nazi-occupied Germany and maintaining the appearance of a normal existence. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when Cioma is approached by Kaufmann, a lawyer, who seeks his talent as a forger to create counterfeit passports to aid in people's desperate escape from persecution.

“The Forger” delves into the complexities of survival, resilience, and the lengths one would go to protect others in the darkest of times.
