Welcome

Greetings from the Consul General

Article

Welcome to the German Consulate General in Montreal! We are very glad you are here!

The German Consulate general in Montreal – with its administrative district of Quebec (except Gatineau) – is part of Team Canada. Together with our colleagues at the German Embassy in Ottawa and the Consulates General in Vancouver and Toronto, we are working to further deepen the close and cordial relations between Germany and Canada.

Many Germans think of Canada as a land of dreams. They think of boundless natural beauty, a multicultural society, but also of ice hockey, the Mounties, and especially the kindness of its people.

For many years, Germany and Canada have been working together amicably on all levels. The reason for our mutual understanding lies in our common values, our allegiance to a rules-based international order, to democracy, human rights, but also to climate protection and sustainability. These values are also the reason for our unwavering commitment to multilateralism. We share the firm conviction that today’s complex challenges can only be effectively tackled and solved in collaboration.

To this end, we Germans and Canadians work together every day in many international fora as well as on the national level. This is also why we are deepening our close ties between the provinces and federal states.

Here in Quebec we can proudly look back on a long tradition: Germany has had a career consulate in Montreal since 1893. Our goal is to bring the people of Germany and Quebec closer together, to exchange ideas on the challenges of our times, from climate change and a sustainable economy to digitization, etc. and to learn from each other.

We are committed to promoting economic and trade relations between Quebec and Germany, especially in innovation, mobility, transport, infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. We could not do this successfully without close Canadian and German partners, including the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Montreal International. We regularly hold workshops and events on these topics with our partners – Follow us on X @AllemagneMTL, LinkedIn and Instagram for updates!

There are also close ties in the field of science. More and more German scientists are working with Canadian universities and research institutions and vice versa. Here, too, the issues of the future of artificial intelligence, energy, mobility and aerospace are of particular interest. The province of Quebec has a lot to offer here. And vice versa, the German Academic Exchange Service offers a broad variety of opportunities for Canadian students and professors who want to study and research in Germany - find out more about DAAD.

Montreal and Quebec are so livable not least because of their so lively and diverse cultural scene. The Goethe-Institut in the “Quartier des Spectacles” is an important part of this dynamic atmosphere. It is financed by the Federal Foreign Office and organizes numerous film evenings and cultural events in which German and Canadian artists, musicians and other cultural actors work together. Why not take part - you can find out more on pages of the Goethe-Institut and at So German!

The Alexander von Humboldt School in Baie-d’Urfé is a particularly international location. Not only do children from Germany and Canada learn together here, but also young people from Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. The new immersion program helps students who are not yet familiar with the German language to find their place at this international school. Find out more about this impressive place of learning at AvH!

The challenges we have faced over the last years have made one thing very obvious: In the years to come, we will continue to face new challenges that can only be solved by closely exchanging ideas, learning from each other, and ultimately acting together. Enabling these cooperations is the goal of our work at the Consulate General in Montreal.

I look forward to many fruitful exchanges with you!

Yours,

Susanne Aschi-Glesius
