Welcome
Greetings from the Consul General
Welcome to the German Consulate General in Montreal!
In Montreal, we are guests of close friends. Our Canadian partners are not only close allies in NATO and the G7, with whom we Germans have enjoyed friendly cooperation at all levels for many years. The people of our countries also enjoy diverse relationships – whether through study visits, cultural ties, travel, work, or business relationships.
This close friendship is not surprising, as Canada and Germany share strong common interests and values. We share the firm conviction that only together can we master the challenges of the profound transformations of the 21st century. Together, we are committed to a rules-based international order, to democracy, human rights, but also to climate protection and sustainability. In this way, we protect our freedom, our security, and our prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.
The German Consulate General in Montreal—with its jurisdiction covering Quebec (except Gatineau)—is part of team Canada of Germany’s foreign missions. Together with our colleagues at the Embassy in Ottawa, the Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver, and the Honorary Consuls, we work every day to further deepen the close and cordial relations between Germany and Canada. This includes expanding the strong ties between provinces and federal states.
Here in Quebec, we look back with pride on a long tradition: Germany has maintained a career consulate in Montreal since 1893. Our goal is to bring the people of Germany and Quebec closer together and to learn from each other on the key issues of our time – from climate change, sustainable economic activity, and energy security to digitalization and artificial intelligence.
To promote economic and trade relations between Quebec and Germany, we work closely with many Canadian and German partners, including the German-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Investissement Québec and Montréal International. The connections are also diverse in the scientific fields. The province of Quebec has a lot to offer, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy security, sustainable mobility, and aerospace. Conversely, the German Academic Exchange Service offers a wide range of opportunities for Canadian students and professors who want to study and conduct research in Germany—find out more at DAAD!
Montreal and Quebec are so livable not least because of their vibrant and diverse cultural scene. Our colleagues at the Goethe-Institut Montréal make a great contribution to this dynamic atmosphere. You can find more information about the program of events on the Goethe-Institut website and at So German!
The Alexander von Humboldt German International School in Baie-d'Urfé is a particularly cosmopolitan institution. It is here that the young builders of German-Canadian relations acquire the essential skills for the 21st century: languages, intercultural skills, and academic excellence. Dear fellow Germans in Quebec, I am well aware that from time to time you would like us to offer a wider range of consular services. I fully understand this. I can assure you that we are mindful of your interests and concerns. As in sports, it is often not the size of the team that counts, but the spirit and commitment. Rest assured that you can count on a small but highly dedicated and motivated team at the Consulate General.
You can find out more about our work on our social media channels – follow us on X @AllemagneMTL, LinkedIn, and Instagram and let's start a conversation there too. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Christian Wagner
