The Economic and Scientific Section of the German Embassy in Ottawa is seeking to fill a one-year position (parental leave replacement)
as Economics/Environment/Science Advisor (full-time, 40 hours per week) starting
on July 6, 2026, until June 30, 2027.

Your responsibilities:

Under the direction of the seconded leadership of the division:

- Monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the following topics:

  • EU economic and trade policy (including CETA)
  • Economic security
  • Digitalization and artificial intelligence, in particular support for the German-Canadian Digital Alliance
  • Climate and environment
  • Arctic science and research issues related to the above topics
  • Maintaining contact with representatives of the Canadian government, companies,

associations, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and scientific organizations

- Participation in regular EU coordination meetings

- Preparation and implementation of delegation trips

- Preparation and implementation of projects and events in the field of climate and environment

Your profile:

- You are interested in economic, climate, and environmental issues and have professional experience in government cooperation, business, and/or non-governmental organizations.

- You enjoy working with people and easily establish new contacts, and you are able to familiarize yourself with new topics independently and quickly.

- You enjoy organizing events and delegation trips and ensure that all details are taken care of.

- You are able to express yourself concisely in written and spoken English and German.

- You work independently and in a goal-oriented manner, while at the same time being able to see your work as part of the overall tasks of the team.

- You are willing to travel on business within Canada.

Formal requirements:

- Native German language skills and very good English skills (spoken and written); French skills are an advantage.

- Completed university degree, preferably with a focus on economics or climate.

- Permanent residence and work permit (Permanent Residence Status or comparable for example as diplomat) in Canada or Canadian citizenship

Contract conditions:

A one-year fixed-term employment contract in accordance with local law with a probationary period, full-time (40 hours per week). An extension is not possible. The expected salary is approximately CAD 95,000 per year.

Shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to introduce and present themselves. The interview is scheduled for the 20th calendar week. A separate invitation will be sent out, travel expenses will sadly not be covered.
