The CEO of Hamburg HafenCity, Professor Juergen Bruns-Berentelg visited Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto last week to gain prespective on pressing issues that Canadian and German cities share and and discuss concepts that tackle urban issues.
In Toronto, Bruns-Berentelg met with fellow economic geographer Meric Gertler, president of the University of Toronto, as well as The Distillery's Mathew Rosenblatt, Chris Giannekos, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Gregg Lintern, Chief Planner & Executive Director, City of Toronto as well as representatives of Waterfront Toronto. All meetings offered great chances to exchange and discuss ideas about how to make our cities more livable. Even though Hamburg and Toronto seem like two completely different cities, they share challenges like a growing population and the potential dangers of flooding for urban settlements. Therefore, the insight knowledge provided by David Stonehouse from the Waterfront Toronto Secretariat during a visit at Toronto's waterfront was very valuable. Great exchange came also from a meeting between Bruns-Berentelg and Urban Strategies Inc, which enrichened both sides. Our guest concluded his visit to Toronto with a stroll though Evergreen Brickworks, Toronto's “jewel of repurposed area”.
