On the occasion of 30th year anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Consulate Toronto and the Goethe-Institut Toronto present a one-time free screening and the Toronto premiere of Gundermann followed by a panel discussion.
GUNDERMANN depicts the life story of the digger driver and famed East German singer Gerhard “Gundi” Gundermann, who eventually turned Stasi spy. It is a film about guilt and entanglement, oppression and confrontation; it is a film about East Germany in the 1980’s. Director Andreas Dresen presents the storied life of the titular political singer-songwriter, covering his struggles with music, life and the secret police with sensitivity, affection and humour.
A panel of former GDR citizens as well as Canadian journalists, who covered the fall of the wall from Berlin in 1989, sharing their very personal stories before and during the fall of the Berlin Wall, will follow the screening.
