Welcome

Goethe Institut Gegenüber Festival: Longing / Belonging

07.10.2024 - Article

Migration stories define 21st-century societies, where people from diverse cultural backgrounds seek belonging and the acceptance of their identities and roots. While cultural diversity is celebrated, new social boundaries emerge, and the vision of an open society is increasingly overshadowed by nationalist narratives – on both sides of the Atlantic.

With the Longing/Belonging festival, the Goethe-Institut showcases artistic perspectives from Germany and North America. The program features literature, performances, films, and conversations with artists from both regions. From mid-September to November 2024, events will take place across North American Goethe-Instituts and online.

On its streaming platform “Goethe on Demand” the Goethe-Institut is offering free online film programs as part of the Longing/Belonging series, including Nasim, Republic of Silence, Kaddish for a Friend, and Zuhur's Daughters. Accessible only in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

The festival highlights migration, identity, and belonging, with events scheduled across Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico, Montreal, New York, Toronto, and Washington.
