The Deutsche Sprachschulen (Metro Toronto) Inc. (DSS) is a not-for-profit organization that has been offering German Saturday school programs for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 since 1956.

This May, we’re hosting two informational events — with an opportunity to visit one of our schools in person and learn more about what DSS has to offer!

  1. We will be hosting an Open House on May 3rd at DSS Richmond Hill! It's a great opportunity to explore the space, meet the Principal, and learn more about our program and community. Don't miss out! Email us at richmondhill@dssgta.org or sign up on this form.
  1. We’re also excited to take part in Doors Open Toronto on May 24th at the Goethe Institute downtown. Together with the Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen, we will present how Saturday schools pave a way towards the Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD), the official German language exams. In keeping with this year’s theme, ”The City is a Playground, we’ll also be offering a variety of fun, German-themed activities for all ages. Come join us and experience the language in action!

This year’s exam season is wrapping up, with the younger students taking their international comparison preparatory exams IVA I and II at the end of April. More than 15 of our students recently participated in the DSD I exams. They showcased their oral proficiency throughout a wide range of engaging topics—from hobbies and travel to careers, favorite books, and sports. We’re keeping our fingers crossed as we await the results…including Richmond Hill Mayor David West, who sent his best wishes to our DSD students all the way from Hannover Messe in Germany via Instagram.

DSS Scarborough is running their annual Lesemarathon (Reading Marathon) in May. Throughout the month, students are encouraged to read as many German books as possible in their favourite genre - fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, picture and board books are all encouraged! Our littlest students can participate by being read too - we will spend extra time in our library and with our reading buddies in class to accumulate minutes. The biggest book worm in every class will win an exciting prize!

DSS Richmond Hill had a fantastic time participating in the Richmond Hill Maple Syrup Festival! With over 2,000 attendees, there was tremendous interest in learning German—and our incredible parent volunteers helped make the day a big success. We enjoyed plenty of pancakes and maple syrup, and when Mayor David West visited our booth, our students tested his newly acquired language skills from his trip to Germany with a quiz. A special highlight was reconnecting with some of our alumni, including one who first learned German at our school more than 60 years ago.

DSS Toronto Central West is celebrating the spring with crafts, an Easter egg hunt, and a Kindergarten field trip to the Brentwood public library, which houses a collection of German-language children’s books. Meanwhile, our parents organized a bake sale featuring delicious treats.
