The German-Canadian community is invited to celebrate a significant milestone with the Deutsche Sprachschulen (Metro Toronto) Inc. (“DSS”), a not-for-profit organization that has been offering German language education (KG to Grade 12) since 1956. This year, DSS is celebrating its 70th anniversary, and the school is hosting a series of exciting events in June to mark this occasion.

On Saturday, June 6th, DSS will hold a tri-school picnic and football tournament for alumni, students, parents, and teachers. This event promises to be a fun-filled day with games, delicious food, and plenty of opportunities to reconnect and reminisce. It will also serve as a celebration of the past 70 years of German language education in the Greater Toronto Area and a look forward to the next 70 years of continued learning.

If you have attended any of the former or current German Saturday schools in the GTA—whether in Etobicoke, Rexdale, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, Toronto Stadt, West Hill, Weston, or Willowdale—DSS invites you to join in the celebration. Alumni can reach out to alumni@dssgta.org
to learn more about the event or to register.

Acknowledging Student Achievements
The Consulate would also like to congratulate DSS students for their outstanding achievements. Students from the schools in Richmond Hill, Toronto Central West, and Scarborough have recently completed the Deutsches Sprachdiplom I written and oral exams for 2026, demonstrating exceptional dedication and commitment to their studies.

In addition, younger students have showcased their impressive skills in reading, listening comprehension, and written communication during the Internationale Vergleichsarbeit A1 and A2. These accomplishments reflect the dedication of both students and teachers at DSS.

Extracurricular Activities
This spring, DSS Scarborough has been particularly active, with students participating in the Jugend Debattiert regional competition, attending the dress rehearsal of Bluebeard’s Castle/Erwartung at the Canadian Opera Company, and engaging with the Connect with Germany Fair at the University of Toronto to learn about exciting exchange programs and study opportunities in Germany.

At the Richmond Hill Maple Syrup Festival on Saturday, March 28, 2026, DSS Richmond Hill hosted a booth that attracted great interest. Visitors had the chance to spin a wheel for prizes while learning fun facts about Germany and its connection to Canadian maple syrup (Germany is the second-largest importer of Canadian maple syrup!). Additionally, the Kaffeeklatsch and Book Sale provided a warm opportunity for alumni to reconnect.

Meanwhile, DSS Toronto Central West students have been enjoying the season with spring activities, including creating sculptures, playing German board games, and reading together. The older students have also been diving into more advanced discussions through the extracurricular debate club. Congratulations to all test candidates, ranging from grades 3 to 12!
