This year, the German Consulate General in Toronto is delighted to join Lumen Waterloo, the city’s annual celebration of light, art and creativity.

As Germany and Canada mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, we are taking the opportunity to celebrate the many connections that bring our two countries together — from diplomacy and business to culture, creativity and, of course, a shared appreciation for a good pretzel.

For this year’s Lumen festival, we are proud to support the return of a very special installation: the Golden Pretzel. This larger-than-life illuminated artwork has already captured hearts at Lumen, and we are thrilled to help bring it back to Waterloo.

But there is a little more to this pretzel than meets the eye — or perhaps, more accurately, than meets the hand. The installation will feature a new element this year that invites festival-goers to experience it in a rather unexpected way.

We won’t give away the surprise just yet. Let’s just say that this is one German-inspired work of art that you may want to get up close and personal with.

So come and discover the Golden Pretzel for yourself at Lumen Waterloo. We look forward to celebrating light, art and the enduring friendship between Germany and Canada with the Waterloo community.

See you at Lumen — and keep an eye out for something golden!
