In this German-Canadian co-production, director Durga Chew-Bose brings Françoise Sagan’s classic novel Bonjour Tristesse to life. Cécile (Lily McInerney), a young woman spending the summer by the sea with her free-spirited father Raymond (Claes Bang) and his girlfriend Elsa (Naïlia Harzoune), finds her world upended when Anne (Chloë Sevigny) arrives and captures Raymond’s attention. As Raymond's affection shifts to Anne, Cécile is deeply troubled and devises a plan to steer her father back to Elsa.
Chew-Bose's directorial debut showcases remarkable skill, capturing the languid haze of summer and the emotional shifts of the characters with an elegant, measured pace. Sensuous and sophisticated, this film is a subtle meditation on awakening desires, executed with precision and grace, heralding the arrival of a major new talent.
