In this epic three-hour saga, German director Matthias Glasner explores the turbulent dynamics of a family in crisis. As death looms for the elders of the Lunies clan, their estranged children must confront each other and their own personal dramas. Tom (Lars Eidinger), a conductor in his early forties, is immersed in composing a piece titled “Dying” while also fulfilling the role of surrogate father to his ex-girlfriend’s child. Meanwhile, his sister Ellen (Lilith Stangenberg) embarks on a destructive affair with a married man. As their lives intersect, old grudges resurface.

Glasner’s film, divided into discrete chapters, is a tense drama that vividly illustrates Tolstoy’s adage: “every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” With its morbid, darkly comic, and unexpectedly invigorating moments, this German film is a profound exploration of the complexities of family life—the people we can’t live with, but also can’t live without.

Manages to be exceedingly funny, often in some of its darkest moments, as well as expectedly sad.
