At COP29, Germany made several key contributions to international climate action, with a focus on supporting vulnerable countries and driving forward critical climate finance initiatives.
International Climate Initiative (IKI)
Germany launched the 2024 Thematic Call of its International Climate Initiative (IKI), which invites project proposals from developing countries and emerging economies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and build resilience to climate change impacts. The IKI has long been a pillar of Germany’s contribution to international climate financing, supporting over 750 projects with a total funding of over 5 billion euros since its inception in 2008.
Commitment to the Loss and Damage Fund
Germany pledged €75 million to the Loss and Damage Fund, which was established at COP29 to assist countries most affected by climate change. This fund aims to help address the financial impacts of loss and damage, providing support to countries that are disproportionately impacted despite contributing little to global emissions.
Contributions to the Climate Adaptation Fund
Germany announced a contribution of €60 million to the Climate Adaptation Fund, which supports the efforts of developing countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Since the fund's inception, Germany has been the largest donor, contributing over $640 million to help at-risk nations mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Collaborative Efforts with Global Partners
Together with Canada and the United Kingdom, Germany pledged $1.3 billion through the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) to support low-carbon production methods and green markets in developing and emerging economies. This funding is essential for creating a level playing field for new, climate-friendly markets, helping accelerate the global transition toward climate neutrality.
Looking Ahead
Germany’s support for global climate action remains steadfast and stronger than ever. Germany will continue to make ongoing contributions to the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the Loss and Damage Fund, and the Climate Adaptation Fund to support vulnerable countries and promote international climate resilience.
