Germany’s Christmas culinary traditions are as diverse as its regions, offering a variety of dishes that reflect its rich heritage.
Many families enjoy festive meals such as roast goose or duck, often paired with potato dumplings (Kartoffelklöße) and red cabbage (Rotkohl). This hearty combination is a staple for Christmas Day dinners. Another popular choice is Sauerbraten (pot roast), slow-cooked to tender perfection and served with spätzle or bread dumplings.
For Christmas Eve, simplicity often reigns with dishes like sausages and potato salad (Würstchen mit Kartoffelsalat), a comforting and convenient option. In some households, the evening revolves around interactive meals like raclette or fondue, where melted cheese and various accompaniments bring family and friends together.
To complete the meal, desserts like Stollen, a fruitcake with marzipan, and baked apples with marzipan and cranberries (Bratäpfel) add a festive touch. Warm beverages such as Glühwein (mulled wine) and the spectacular Feuerzangenbowle round off the celebration.
