The Surrey German Language School (SGLS) is a non-profit school in the Vancouver region dedicated to teaching the German language and sharing German culture. Since 1971, the school has been an integral part of the German-speaking community in British Columbia, offering language instruction for children, youth, and adults.

The school welcomes both German-speaking families and learners who are new to the language. It offers two parallel streams of instruction:

  • DaF – German as a Foreign Language, for students with little or no prior knowledge of German
  • DaZ – German as a Second Language, for students who speak German at home (at least partially) or already have a solid foundation

The curriculum follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The school's goal is to provide students not only with language skills, but also with a deeper understanding of German-speaking culture, history, and society.

Programs

The Surrey German Language School offers a wide range of classes:

  • Preschool (starting at approx. age 4)
  • Kindergarten
  • Grades 1–8 (available in both DaF and DaZ streams)
  • German Language Diploma I and II (DSD I & II)
  • Adult classes for beginners and advanced learners

Classes take place on Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 PM at Kwantlen Secondary School in Surrey and are led by a dedicated team of German-speaking educators. In addition to their language classes, the school places great value on building community and celebrating cultural traditions.

The school is more than just a place to learn, it’s a vibrant hub for German-speaking families and those interested in the language. Throughout the school year, SGLS hosts many events that strengthen the sense of community and keep cultural traditions alive:

  • Christmas celebration with a traditional German Christmas market
  • Oktoberfest Pub Night for parents
  • St. Martin’s Lantern Walk
  • German Carnival (Karneval) in February
  • Maifest to joyfully close out the school year
  • School library, Kaffeeklatsch, book sales, reading contests, and much more
