Why study German in Vancouver? At the University of British Columbia (UBC), learning German is more than acquiring a language—it’s about becoming a thoughtful, engaged, and multilingual citizen of the world.

Our award-winning German Studies program empowers students to:

  • Express themselves confidently in German and English
  • Explore global histories and cultures with empathy
  • Examine power structures in society and media
  • Collaborate across disciplines and languages
  • Understand how multilingualism intersects with identity, justice, and community responsibility

UBC German Studies combines language learning, literature, film, history, and digital and traditional storytelling to help students think critically, communicate effectively, and thrive in our interconnected world. Whether preparing for international careers, graduate study, or leadership roles in multicultural communities, our students graduate with the cultural literacy and intellectual humility that today’s world demands.
