Organized by Ervin Malakaj, professor of German Studies at UBC and author of Anders als die Andern, this event is part of a new series of performances that combine cinema with live music, movement, theatre, and more.
Local experimental music duo Magazinist (Matthew Tomkinson and Andy Zuliani) will perform their newest original electro-acoustic score for the groundbreaking 1919 film Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others), one of the earliest films to sympathetically depict gay men on screen. Produced in Weimar Germany as a polemical response to laws criminalizing homosexuality, the film provoked censorship, exile for its creators, and the near-destruction of all copies by the Nazis as “decadent art.” Through careful preservation, fifty of the original ninety minutes have survived, allowing modern audiences to witness some of the earliest organized campaigns for LGBTQ+ rights.
The evening begins with a brief introduction by Ervin Malakaj, who will provide historical context and discuss the film’s cultural significance.
Magazinist’s immersive score combines analog synthesis, digital sampling, and hand-built instruments, creating a unique experience that bridges history, music, and experimental sound art.
