Last week, the German federal government launched its €18 billion Hightech Agenda, a strategic initiative to strengthen Germany’s innovation, technological sovereignty, and global competitiveness. The agenda targets six cutting-edge technologies:
- 🛰️ Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- 🛰️ Quantum Technologies
- 🛰️ Microelectronics
- 🛰️ Biotechnology
- 🛰️ Nuclear Fusion & Climate‑Neutral Energy Generation
- 🛰️ Technologies for Climate‑Neutral Mobility
Beyond these technologies, the agenda also highlights strategic fields such as aerospace, health research, defense & security, marine and climate sustainability, and the humanities — all areas with strong potential for international collaboration.
Germany’s Hightech Agenda includes flagship initiatives with concrete timelines, embedding European and international cooperation at its core. By fostering strong partnerships, it opens up exciting opportunities for Canadian research institutes to engage in joint projects, exchange talent and expertise, and conduct research within world-class infrastructures in both countries.
Through Horizon Europe, Canadian researchers can secure funding to collaborate directly with German and other EU partners, creating a unique platform for knowledge exchange and innovation. Horizon Europe is the world's largest funding program for research and innovation, with a total budget of €95.5 billion for the period 2021–2027. Combined with the Hightech Agenda’s resources, projects can maximize funding and impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
