An ideal moment to highlight German-Canadian collaboration and shared advances in polar science.

In 2025, German polar researchers joined the Gwich’in Tribal Council for a tundra expedition in western Canada as part of the “SQUEEZE” project. The team studied thawing permafrost, shifting tree lines, and the increasing threats to local biodiversity — highlighting the urgent need for action. There is much to be learned from the Indigenous experts who have observed and studied the #tundra and its changes for time immemorial. This expedition was the first step in a continuing partnership with the Gwich’in Tribal Council. 🍁

For more than three decades, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research has been one of the world’s leading centres for Arctic and polar research, working closely with the German Arctic Office to support long-term, interdisciplinary research efforts.
