How can we protect ourselves in an online world where women and children are increasingly reduced to targets of abuse?
And what is politically and technically possible — in Germany, Canada, and beyond?

The digital world can be dangerous: women and girls increasingly face harassment online, amplified by platforms, algorithms, and AI. In this fireside chat, organized by the German Embassy in Ottawa, the German Consulate General in Vancouver and ifa (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations), we will explore real challenges women face online:

  • What does harassment look like, and how does it spread?
  • What can you realistically do if it happens to you?

Experts from Germany and Canada will share experiences and insights to equip you with practical tools and guidance on:

  • what to do if you experience online harassment or hate
  • which resources and organisations can support you
  • what legal protections exist — and where gaps remain
  • how governments in Germany and Canada are trying to regulate platforms and AI
  • how we can support each other and build stronger networks against online violence

Our goal: participants should leave better informed, more confident, and less alone when facing digital abuse.

Featuring:

Franziska Benning, Head of Legal and Policy at HateAid, supporting victims of digital violence and advising the German Bundestag on online rights and regulation.

Dr. Nasreen Rajani, Canadian expert on technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Moderator:

Prof. Dr. Heidi Tworek, Canada Research Chair at UBC, specializing in digital platforms and global information governance.
