Dr. Nadine Herold from the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) is currently working as Leibniz Attaché at the Consulate General of Germany in Vancouver as part of a three-month work shadowing programme jointly organised by the Leibniz Association and the German Federal Foreign Office.
Following her introduction in our previous newsletter, we are pleased to share a brief update on Dr. Herold’s activities over the past two months. She has held a wide range of meetings and undertaken institutional visits with universities and research organisations across Western Canada, including leading academic institutions in British Columbia. The aim of these exchanges has been to identify and assess opportunities for future collaboration between Canadian counterparts and the 96 institutes of the Leibniz Association.
Discussions have focused on shared research interests in areas such as the bioeconomy, sustainable agriculture, environmental research, and bio-based innovation. Particular attention has been given to existing complementarities between Canadian research strengths and the interdisciplinary and applied research conducted across institutes within the Leibniz Association.
This exchange has highlighted a clear trend: Canadian universities are actively seeking to expand research cooperation with European partners, including Germany. Several discussions have opened initial avenues for potential collaboration, which now provide a basis for further exploration towards staff exchanges, joint projects, and potentially more structured, long-term partnerships. For Canadian institutions, these collaborations also provide access to Horizon Europe, opening additional opportunities for joint research funding with German and European partners.
We look forward to continuing this dialogue and further developing promising strands of cooperation in the months ahead.
