One of the particularly appealing aspects of VIFF is the opportunity to encounter filmmakers directly.

The German Focus is therefore not simply a collection of films. Several directors will be in Vancouver to introduce their work and take part in conversations with audiences.

There is also a strong industry component.

Editor Evelyn Rack will present the masterclass “Editing as Discovery: Narrative, Instinct, and the Unpredictable,” offering insights into the creative process of editing fiction and documentary films. Drawing on her work as the editor of internationally acclaimed films such as Sound of Falling, which premiered in the Cannes Competition and received the Jury Prize, Evelyn Rack will share insights into her craft.

This emphasis on dialogue — between filmmakers and audiences, and between emerging artists and the wider film community — is an important part of what makes the German presence at VIFF particularly interesting.

As Simone Baumann, Managing Director of German Films, notes, Vancouver offers an important platform for presenting German cinema to a young and diverse audience interested in European film, while also connecting with a strong film and media infrastructure and educational institutions.

VIFF Director of Programming Curtis Woloschuk similarly points to the distinctive perspectives and lived experiences brought to the screen by this new generation of German filmmakers.
