Welcome
West Vancouver Art Museum: Angela Grossmann: Unfolding
Angela Grossmann: Unfolding © Andrea Grossmann & West Vancouver Art Museum
From October 20 to December 12, 2026, the West Vancouver Art Museum presents Angela Grossmann: Unfolding, a solo exhibition exploring the Canadian artist’s longstanding engagement with the human figure, memory, and emotional experience.
Born in 1955, Angela Grossmann is a Canadian artist with German roots who has lived and worked in Vancouver since childhood. Her paintings, photo-based collages, and mixed-media works focus particularly on the female form and draw on an extensive archive of art-historical references, postcards—including many acquired at flea markets in Germany and France—and found snapshots.
Grossmann’s figures occupy an intriguing space between presence and disappearance. Through layered brushwork and restless drawing, she creates works in which contours emerge, dissolve, and reappear, leaving identity deliberately unresolved. Rather than telling a specific story, her works invite viewers to engage with memory, vulnerability, and the shifting nature of identity.
Grossmann holds an MFA from Concordia University and has taught at the University of British Columbia, the Ontario College of Art and Design, and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her work has been exhibited extensively across Canada, the United States, and Europe, including at the Vancouver Art Gallery and in a retrospective at the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton.
German Curator’s Tour
As part of the exhibition, the West Vancouver Art Museum will offer a German-language curator’s tour on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 2–3 p.m. The tour provides an opportunity to explore Grossmann’s work and her artistic practice in German.
The tour is free of charge; admission to the museum is by donation. Further information about the German-language tour is available here.
