Article

The Violet Carpenter Bee has been crowned Bee of the Year 2024, emphasizing the critical importance of bee conservation. Bees are essential to our ecosystem and food supply, but many species are currently facing the threat of extinction. It's up to each of us to take action to ensure their survival.

Here’s how you can contribute:

  1. Become a Hobby Beekeeper: Vancouver permits residents to keep beehives, and the city's website provides all the information you need to get started. By maintaining a beehive, you’ll support local bee populations and enjoy the rewards of beekeeping.
  2. Join a Bee Community Project: Participate in the exciting initiative by Pollinator Partnership Canada to form a Bee Community with a dedicated group of like-minded individuals. This project offers resources and a collaborative environment to help bees thrive.
  3. Plant Bee-Friendly Gardens: Whether in a garden, on a balcony, or in any outdoor space, planting bee-friendly plants can significantly impact bee survival!

Take Part in Our Contest!

Below in the picture gallery we have displayed some bee-friendly plants—can you name at least five of them? The first person to correctly identify five will win the top prize, the second will receive the second prize, and so on. Don't miss out on the chance to participate!

Send your answers to ku-s1@vanc.diplo.de with “Bee Contest” in the subject line until September 22. As always, the winners will be announced in our next newsletter. Good luck!

Help us protect our bees—one plant, hive, or community at a time!
