The Vancouver Jewish Film Festival (VJFF), Canada’s longest-running Jewish film festival, will celebrate its 36th edition from April 24 to May 4, 2025. Here is a brief summary of the films with a German connection:
“UnBroken”
One of the highlights is “UnBroken,” a powerful documentary that tells the incredible story of the seven Weber siblings. After their mother was deported to Auschwitz, where she was killed, the children managed to escape capture, hiding for two years in war-torn Germany. In 1946, they made headlines upon their arrival in the United States.
“Beethoven's NINE: Ode to Humanity”
Another fascinating contribution is “Beethoven's NINE: Ode to Humanity,” a documentary that explores the profound impact of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The film features diverse perspectives, from Ukrainian musicians to a deaf composer and a Polish rock star, reflecting on how this iconic piece continues to inspire hope and connect people worldwide.
Special Screenings with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre
In collaboration with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC), the VJFF will present two impactful films on April 29, 2025, at 6:30 PM: “Crossing the River” and “Inked: Our Stories Remarked.” These screenings focus on Holocaust memory and the transmission of stories across generations, offering thoughtful reflections on history’s lasting influence.
