2025 is the United Nations' International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, with April 14 being World Quantum Day.
Germany is rapidly advancing in quantum computing, aiming to establish itself as a global leader in this transformative technology. The German government has committed €3 billion by 2026 to develop a universal quantum computer.
In 2024, IBM opened its first European quantum data center in southern Germany - only the company's second facility of its kind in the world. Also in 2024, QSolid, in collaboration with the Jülich Forschungszentrum, unveiled Germany's first superconducting quantum computer prototype with 10 qubits. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), this €76.3 million project aims to facilitate complex calculations for both scientific and industrial applications.
