I am a German citizen with permanent residency in Canada. I already have a valid German passport. Do I now have to apply for a German ID card as well?

No. The new German ID card is an option to you as a German citizen living abroad. It could serve as a secondary proof of identity. It does offer certain unique functionalities which may be useful for online transactions and digital signatures.

What are the benefits of this card?

The new ID card is a multi-function card the size of a credit card. It can be used as a proof of identity in person and on the internet. The new cards have been prepared to use the qualified electronic signature (QES).

What are the costs?

Depending on the exchange rate, the new ID card costs about C$80,- if you are 24 years of age or older and approx. C$72,- if you are under 24 years of age. You must come in person if you are applying for a new German ID card.
