February 21st is UNESCO International Mother Language Day. Some 100 million people speak German as their first language worldwide, and knowing some of the over 250 different distinct German dialects can be useful.
An official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Belgium and Liechtenstein, German does have some oddities. The German dialects are a language on their own and as the Brothers Grimm did rightly so through their tales, preserving our dialects is crucial. Happy studying! Macht et jot!
