Dear Readers,

In May 2025, important elections in Poland, Portugal, and Romania drew attention to the shifting political landscape across Europe. These elections highlighted political fragmentation and growing tensions between pro-European and nationalist forces – a dynamic that continues to fuel debates about Europe’s future and democratic values in many EU countries.

In Poland, the first round of the presidential election resulted in a close contest between centrist Rafał Trzaskowski and right-wing candidate Karol Nawrocki. The runoff scheduled for June 1st is expected to shape Poland’s domestic and European policies.

Portugal witnessed early parliamentary elections where the center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) secured the most seats but fell short of an absolute majority. Notably, the far-right Chega party made significant gains, reflecting a shift in the political landscape and raising questions about future coalition dynamics.

In Romania, pro-European candidate Nicușor Dan won the presidency in a runoff against far-right contender George Simion. This election followed the annulment of the previous year's results due to concerns over foreign interference, highlighting ongoing challenges to electoral integrity.

These elections illustrate the evolving political currents within Europe, marked by the rise of populist movements, but also continued support for European cooperation and democratic values. Today, the commitment to democracy, equality, peace, and freedom is more important than ever –defending democracy is not just a task for election days – it is a continuous effort, both at home and on the global stage.

This is why international cooperation and dialogue remain so crucial. Under Canada's G7 presidency, global leaders are coming together to address some of today’s most pressing challenges. Last week's meeting of G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in Banff, Alberta, and the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis serve as vital platforms for advancing shared commitments to peace, democracy, and a rules-based international order.

A life in freedom and democracy is never guaranteed – it is something each generation must protect and actively uphold.

We’re grateful to all who care deeply about these values. With that spirit in mind, we wish you a joyful and peaceful start to summer in beautiful Canada!
