Our Consular Services: Overview
COVID-19: Limited Consular Services
Dear customers,We would like to inform you that due to the current situation with COVID-19, we have adjusted our legal and consular services offered by the German Missions in Canada.
To provide the highest degree of safety for our customers and staff members, special organizational and sanitary measures have been implemented for the visitor services at the German Consulates General Toronto and Vancouver.
Please note that it is possible to book an appointment for the following legal and consular services only requiring in-person attendance at the German Consulate General Toronto:
- Certification of signature (if required by an authority in Germany, i.e. in real estate, commercial or inheritance matters)
-Birth Registration
- Marriage Registration
- Name declaration
- Application for naturalization
- Border crossing certificate
- Translation of driver’s license
- Urn transport certificatesThe following legal and consular services do not require personal attendance and will thus only be provided via mail. If you require any of the following services, please follow the instructions on our website to request the services via mail.
- Legalization of Canadian certificates and documents
- Certification of photocopies
- Applications for retaining German citizenship (Beibehaltungsgenehmigung)
- Application for certificate of German citizenship (“Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis”)
- Pension matters
-General inquiriesPlease take note that currently, no appointments to authorize signatures on applications for a police clearance certificate from Germany can be offered.
The necessary authorization can be done by a foreign authority or a (Canadian) Notary Public.If you wish to apply for naturalization, please contact us using our . Appointments are assigned individually and cannot be booked through our online appointment booking system.

Since July 2015, the Consulate General in Toronto is the only German mission in Canada to offer comprehensive consular services.
The Consulate General in Vancouver continues to offer most consular services
The Embassy in Ottawa and the Consulate General in Montreal have ceased to offer consular services altogether.
Employees of the Consulate General in Toronto may offer limited consular services for German citizens living in Quebec in the premises of the Consulate General in Montreal several times each year during the off-season (fall to early spring). As soon as the time for the next consular week is determined, it will be published here on our website together with information about the booking of appointments. We kindly ask for your understanding that we are not yet able to communicate the timing of the next consular week. For any consular matter you might wish to settle in the meantime, the Consulate General in Toronto shall be glad to assist you.
